The Montgomery elementary school recommended for closure by an architectural consultant to the West Aurora School District bears the name of a woman who was synonymous with education in the village during the first half of the 20th century.
Grace B. Nicholson’s classroom at the old Montgomery School “was a place where many Montgomery children learned to learn,” according to The History of Montgomery, Illinois published by the Montgomery Historical Committee in 1990.
Nicholson came to the school as a teacher in 1902 and was later named principal. According to the history book, “she continued to teach a double classroom until her retirement in 1949. Using her personal funds, Miss Nicholson started the first school library. She also instituted the first kindergarten and shortly after the First World War, the first PTA group.”
