The Richard Spring Memorial Race came with mixed reviews for the Oswego boys and girls cross country teams last Saturday at Detweiller Park.
Hosted by Peoria Notre Dame, the prestigious meet included 57 varsity girls' teams and Lake Park's Kaylee Flanagan led the field of nearly 500 runners, setting a new meet record with a time of 16:44. Oak Park-River Forest's Malachy Schrobilgen paced more than 550 varsity runners with his top time of 14:21 with 64 schools participating.
In the varsity girls' race, Lake Park finished first with 126 points ahead of Palatine (174) and St. Charles East (194). Oswego finished 18th with 551 points and junior Kelsey Hjorth led the Panthers with a 10th place finish in 17:26. Junior Allison Darby placed 69th in 18:38 while senior Lauren Choi (19:07), junior Ashley Golembeski (19:19), sophomore Teagan Terando (19:28), junior Alex Choi (19:44) and senior Riley Vann (20:41) competed for Oswego.
"We were real pleased with our results down there. Last year we were 29th and this year we were 18th," Oswego girls' head coach Eric Simon said. "It's a great meet. It was a real good one for us. I think I counted 15 ranked schools so it's a high-caliber meet. It's nice to be part of that and we did real well."
The Oswego varsity boys finished 23rd overall with 581 points. Palatine, the top-ranked Class 3A team, finished ahead of Class 2A's top-ranked Belvidere North 113-174 while York was third with 182 points.
Junior Caleb Beck was the first Oswego finisher, placing 28th in 15:06 while senior Zack Kingsbury was 53rd in 15:25 and senior Jared Konrardy was 90th in 15:41. Senior Adam Lowry (16:16), , junior Grant Borchelt (16:44), junior Peter Rogalla (16:48) and freshman Peter Johnsrud (16:58) also finished for Oswego.
"Individually, we had a lot of really good PRs - we had 16 PRs out of the 25 guys who raced so that was nice to see they took advantage of the speed of the course," Oswego boys' head coach Dan Whipple said. "But as a team, which is what we're focused on, we kind of fell apart. They're aware of what improvements we need to make."
Oswego also raced without two of its varsity runners, but junior Christian Bartell is expected to return to the lineup Saturday. Sophomore Desmond Meyer may be out of the lineup until mid-October.
Oswego will now enter the Aurora Central Catholic Charger Classic on Saturday at Oakhurst Forest Preserve at 10 a.m.
"Looking at the teams that are there, we're one of possibly four teams there that could win it if we put ourselves back together the way we were two weeks ago and we could potentially do that," Whipple said. "We'll see West Aurora, Yorkville and Marmion and all three are very good teams. Our goal is to be one of the three teams with a trophy."
The IHSA released postseason assignments late last week, moving into the Class 3A Plainfield South Regional on Oct. 22. The Panthers will look to advance into the Lockport Sectional on Oct. 29.
"In my fifth year, it's almost like we've gone somewhere different every year," Simon said. "We've gone south, we've gone north to St. Charles and now we're going to Plainfield. It'll be interesting. We think we're heading in the right direction and we're a team that can be in the sectional meet. I like where we're headed."
The Plainfield South Regional will consist of Bolingbrook, Lockport, Neuqua Valley, Oswego East, Plainfield Central, Plainfield East, Plainfield North, Plainfield South and Romeoville. Oswego will see six of those nine teams one week earlier at the Southwest Prairie Conference meet on Oct. 15.
"We're feeling pretty good about that," Whipple said. "When we moved up to the St. Charles Sectional last year, there were individuals who advanced out of the Lockport Sectional that some of our guys had beaten consistently throughout the season. Caleb was so close to individually qualifying last year as a sophomore out of St. Charles. I think it's definitely a sectional we can compete with and do well with."
