Two people were killed and another injured in a two-vehicle crash on U.S. Route 30 just west of Goodwin Drive in Oswego Tuesday at 6:32 p.m.
Nicholas J. Miller, 18, of the 900 block of Mason Avenue, Aurora, a passenger in one of the vehicles, was pronounced dead at the accident scene, Oswego Police Det. Rob Sherwood said Wednesday morning.
The driver of the vehicle in which Miller was a passenger, Jessica M. Nichols, 18, of 0-99 block of Spring Garden Road, Boulder Hill, was taken to Rush Copley Medical Center in Aurora and died Wednesday morning, Sherwood said.
The driver of the other vehicle involved in the crash, Terry L. Clark, 57, of the 22000 block of Pilcher Road, Plainfield, was also injured and transported to Rush-Copley Medical Center, according to Sherwood.
Information on Clark's condition was not available as of press time. Sherwood said moments prior to the Route 30 crash, Nichols' 2000 Infiniti sedan rear-ended another vehicle driven by Mark D. Mersman, 35, of Aurora on U.S. Route 34 and Ogden Falls Boulevard.
The initial accident resulted in very minor damage and Mersman and two occupants in his vehicle were not injured, Sherwood said. After the initial accident, Nichols' vehicle fled westbound on Route 30.
"Our preliminary information is that the driver of the Infiniti (Nichols) lost control of the vehicle and it was struck broadside on the passenger side by a vehicle (Clark's 2003 Ford Expedition) which was traveling eastbound on Route 30," Sherwood said.
Sherwood said Miller was seated in the right front passenger seat in the Infiniti.
The cause of the accident is still under investigation, Sherwood said. In addition to Oswego Police, Montgomery Police and an accident reconstruction unit from the Illinois State Police assisted at the scene.
The Kendall County State's Attorney's office is participating in the investigation, Sherwood said.
The accident victims were treated and transported from the scene by Oswego Fire Protection District Paramedics.
