A stellar effort on H1N1 vaccine clinics
11/12/2009

Cheryl Johnson and her staff at the Kendall County Health Department are to be commended for their ongoing effort to provide the H1N1 flu vaccine to county residents in a professional and orderly manner.

We also note that Johnson and her staff have been able to secure an ample supply of the vaccine.

As we reported last week, the health department building in Yorkville was mobbed with people two weeks ago, the day the agency conducted the first of what is a continuing series of vaccine clinics. People of all ages began showing up for the first clinic four hours before its scheduled start and a record number of people-1,773 to be exact-received vaccines.

Clinics held this past Monday and Tuesday also attracted large crowds.

We were disappointed when the health department canceled the two clinics it had previously scheduled for the new Oswego Fire Station No. 1 at 3511 Woolley Road. The local clinics would have proven more convenient for Oswego and Montgomery residents. However, we understand the logistics involved. When the fire department held an open house at the new station a few weeks ago an estimated 700 residents turned out and parking was extremely limited. The fire station site just isn't large enough to accommodate a rush of 700 people or more. We can only imagine what the traffic jam would have been like on Woolley Road if the health department had held the clinics as originally planned.

If you haven't yet received the vaccine, the health department will be holding clinics at its building at 811 W. John Street on the county government campus in Yorkville next Wednesday and Thursday, Nov. 18 and 19, from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. each day. Additional clinics are also scheduled at the building later this month and in December. For those unfamiliar with Yorkville, the county government campus is located along the south side of U.S. Route 34, across the highway from the Target store. For additional information, contact the health department at 630-553-9100.
