Next Wednesday, Nov. 11 at exactly 11 a.m. people will gather in Oswego, Montgomery and across our country to remember and honor our nation's veterans.
Oswego American Legion Post 675 will host a short remembrance ceremony at the Veterans Memorial Plaza at Main and Jefferson streets in the village's downtown, while the Montgomery Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 121 will conduct a ceremony at the veterans' memorial in Riverside Cemetery off North River Street.
It is difficult for most people to break away from work or other obligations in the middle of most weekdays, but we strongly encourage everyone to attend one of the Veterans Day ceremonies. The ceremonies date to 1919 when President Woodrow Wilson first proclaimed Armistice Day following the end of World War I, the war that was waged to end all wars. In 1954, nearly a decade after World War II and at the height of the Cold War, Congress changed the name of Armistice Day to Veterans Day in an effort to honor all of our nation's veterans.
Although brief, our local Veterans Day ceremonies are nevertheless poignant. They also provide an opportunity for local residents-just by attending-to show support for those who served and fought to keep us all free. Our veterans were there for you back when, why not be there for them next Wednesday?
