H1N1 flu shot clinics
start next Thursday

The first H1N1 flu vaccine clinic in Kendall County will be held next Thursday, Oct. 29 from 3 to 6 p.m. at the Kendall County Health Department Building at 811 W. John Street in Yorkville.

The shots will also be available at clinics in Newark, Oswego and Plano throughout November and December. The county's flu shot hotline is 630-553-8340.

The vaccine is free to the public but health officials are advising targeted groups to get the shot first.

According to Cheryl Johnson, Kendall County Health Department Director, higher risk priority groups for H1N1 influenza-related complications include:

Pregnant women and household caregivers of children younger than six months, health care and emergency medical personnel, all people six months through 24 years old and people 25 through 64 with health conditions associated with higher risk of medical complications from influenza.

The priority designations should come in first but no one will be turned away.

"We would hope that everyone would be responsible and respectful of the priority groups needing to get theirs first, but shots will be available to everyone," Johnson said.

Johnson declined to say exactly how many doses of the vaccine they received, but explained that it was significantly smaller than the amount ordered. She said she was confident that there would be enough vaccines for all residents who wanted them.

However, the health department will not be taking appointments; residents need to show up at the scheduled clinics.

"If you have any of the symptoms as related to H1N1 or have been exposed to people that have those symptoms you really need to come in," Johnson said. "It's just like the seasonal flu shot we have the ability to prevent people getting it (the disease)."

County out of seasonal shot

In the meantime, the county like most health departments in Illinois according to Johnson, has run out of the adult vaccine of the seasonal flu shot. A children's version of the vaccine is still available. Johnson mentioned the county ran out of the seasonal flu shot last Thursday after almost 300 residents turned out at the second seasonal flu clinic.

Johnson said they received only a little over half of the seasonal flu vaccine they ordered.

"We don't expect to get any more in," she said.

The vaccine is still available at area retail stores for $25.
