New league plans underway
Morris, Yorkville ready to enter Northern Illinois Big 12

6/18/2009

Plans for the inception of the Northern Illinois Big 12 Conference are underway.

Twelve high schools, including one in Kendall County, met Monday at LaSalle-Peru High School to sign a contract to join the Northern Illinois Big 12 at the start of the 2010-11 school year.

Yorkville, DeKalb, Kaneland, Rochelle and Sycamore will leave the Western Sun Conference at the end of the 2009-10 school year. Morris - which left the Southwest Prairie Conference earlier this month when the school year came to a close - joins the North Central Illinois Conference (NCIC) for the 2009-10 school year, but then will leave after one year to join the newest Northern Illinois Big 12 for its inaugural season.

With five of the eight members of the Western Sun Conference joining together in a new conference, Batavia, Geneva and Glenbard South will be in search of a new conference for the 2010-11 school year.

"We're going to finish it professionally," Yorkville athletic director Seth Schoonover said. "We've got good relationships with those schools. The economy came to a halt and our growth isn't going to be what we anticipated. When there's almost 1,000 student difference between schools it makes it tough. We looked at it in the long run and we're better off going where we are now than staying where we were. We may never have caught up with them."

Those six schools mentioned will make up the conference's East Division. In the West Division, Dixon, Geneseo, LaSalle-Peru, Ottawa, Sterling and Streator round out the 12-member league.

The athletic directors will meet monthly beginning in August to work on athletic schedules and bylaws, with the hope to get the 2010-11 schedules finalized by October.
