School district to drop Oswego name as part of re-imaging

by Natalie Stevens

The Oswego School District's image will be undergoing several changes this fall, starting with its name.

Commonly called 'Oswego 308,' the district will be switching to the new moniker of "SD 308" to align with components of the district's strategic plan.

Superintendent Dr. Matthew Wendt announced the change at last week's school district board meeting with the introduction of a new logo and update on the district's website redesign.

"Part of any strategic plan includes goals," Wendt said. "Alongside that plan we have been working on two major projects: a new website and a new logo."

The district has steadily been transitioning to the domain of and Wendt said there are plans to launch the new website, built from scratch, this fall.

"We're planning to launch in late October, at the latest by Nov. 1," he said. "There are over 20,000 pages of information we're working with and progress is good."

Featured on the new website will be the new school district logo, which bears the name SD 308.

"About 18,000 students will join us on Monday (Aug. 18 for class) and in that growing percent, an enormous amount don't have an Oswego residence or address," Wendt said, adding, "This is nothing against Oswego, but more about including everyone in the system."

The district also serves students in the surrounding communities of Yorkville, Aurora, Plainfield, Joliet and Montgomery. The district encompasses approximately 63 square miles in Kendall, Will and Kane counties.

"We want to ensure in our logo that that 40 percent of our students are a part of our system," Wendt said.

Over 100 individuals were part of the designing and choosing of the logo, and the winning entry received the most votes in the final round.

According to board documents, the "0" in the "308" represents world class education with the image of a globe and the ring represents "encompassing future possibilities and the eternal commitment to learning."

The color scheme represents various characteristics including: generosity, elevation of the mind, loyalty, security and dependability.

The globe could also be incorporated into each school's webpage and mascot image with corresponding colors to create an "umbrella" image for the district.

Wendt said the district looked to neighboring school districts for ideas and found about 15-20 districts that also use the "SD" format. The closest one is School District 129 in West Aurora.

The board will be asked to vote on the new logo at a board meeting in a couple of weeks so it can be placed on the new website.

"It's important we bring everybody together," Wendt said, "[and] allow more and more know people know this school district, 308, is our system. I believe our logo will help do that."
