Oswego East football team capitalizes on successful summer

by Kristin Sharp

Fresh off its most successful season in program history, the Oswego East football team had plenty of momentum to build off of this offseason.

The Wolves spent the summer participating in several area events, including Wheaton Warrenville South's Red Grange Classic and the Bolingbrook Jamboree

Oswego East also saw Yorkville and East Aurora at Aurora University and spent time facing teams like West Aurora and Sterling before closing out the summer on Wednesday against Marmion.

A noticeable absence was Oswego East's own 7-on-7, which had to be cancelled this year due to an overlap with the Red Grange event.

"We went to the Red Grange national select tournament that Wheaton Warrenville South hosts, and that's why we didn't host our 7-on-7 because they moved it to the date when we typically have ours," Oswego East head coach Tyson LeBlanc said. "We played well and went 5-4 in tournament and our losses were to some of the top programs in the state like Maine South, Wheaton Warrenville South and Montini. We played well there."

Oswego East is building off a 7-4 finish that saw the Wolves make their first-ever postseason appearance, reaching the second round of the Class 7A playoffs. Now, they will look ahead to a new season that begins with the opening day of practice on Aug. 11.

"All in all, we've had a pretty good offseason. We've got holes to replace, especially on both offensive and defensive lines, but the guys have put some good work in the weight room. We did strength and conditioning camp in the mornings, so the guys have been very consistent being there," LeBlanc said. "We've got a lot of young guys coming up who are trying to fill the void."

Oswego East will maintain an identical schedule, with opposite field locations. The Wolves will host Woodstock in the season opener on Aug. 29 at 7 p.m. before traveling to Glenbard East in Week 2. The Southwest Prairie Conference season opens on Sept. 12 at home against Plainfield North, with additional home games against Oswego (Oct. 3), Plainfield Central (Oct. 10) and Romeoville (Oct. 24).

"We've got a little bit more of an idea of what these teams will do. Woodstock is losing some pretty good guys, but Glenbard East is going to be vastly improved," LeBlanc said. "They had some good, young players last year that will be seniors this year. It's nice having an idea now what they're going to do."
