Third park board member resigns since November
Mattingly: Roy White will be missed

by Lyle R. Rolfe

Oswegoland Park District Board member Roy White has resigned.

Bob Mattingly, board president, told his board colleagues this past week that White had recently called him and told him of his plans to leave the board.

Mattingly said White cited his age, health and a desire to travel more with his wife as the reasons for his resignation.

White was first elected to the board in April of 2011 to fill the remainder of a two-year term created by the resignation of Ken Holmstrom. He was subsequently re-elected to a second two-year term last year.

In a letter to the board, White wrote: "When I was elected my goal was to curb spending and reduce taxes. Over the years I have tried to suggest ways to achieve that. In some cases the board accomplished some of my suggestions. However, there are some areas I feel the board must address in the near future-for instance the Fox Bend Golf Course.

White added, "I would like to wish the board well and lots of success in the future."

Rich Zielke, executive director, said White had been a great board member to work with during his more than three years on the board.

"He brought a lot of great ideas to the staff in helping us carry out what we do day-to-day," he said.

Mattingly said White served the board well and would be missed.

"I knew Roy and his wife, Linda, wanted to do more traveling. I was hoping he could finish out his term, but obviously, he cannot," Mattingly said.

White is the third person to resign from the five-member board since last November.

Long-time board member Deb Krase stepped down in November, while her replacement Adam Schienkopf served until April when he announced he was being transferred out of state by his employer and he, too, would leave the board.

In seeking a replacement for Krase last year, the board received 13 applications for the vacant seat. Of those 13 applicants, the board interviewed just four.

Mattingly said he will recommend a third person from the four who have been interviewed, to replace White. He said he expects the board to approve an appointment in June or July.

Prior to being elected to the park district board, White served stints on both the Oswego Village Board and the Kendall County Board in the 1980s. During his years on the county board, White chaired the finance committee and was board vice chairman.
