by Kristin Sharp

The Oswego East boys' track and field team knew its competition had strong sprinters and field event participants, but the Wolves scored big in the mid-distance and distance events.

In the end, the Wolves tallied 147 points to win the Stagg Invite last Saturday, topping runner-up Romeoville by 26 points while Thornton (118), Joliet West (48) and Stagg (40) rounded out the top five in the 10-team field.

Khalil Driver highlighted the meet in the field events with a pair of a personal best marks in the triple jump (44-5) and long jump (21-10 3/4). He won the long jump and placed third in the triple jump.

"We're really excited to see where he ends up at the end of the season," Oswego East head coach Aaron Kimpton said.

"It was really tough for us considering we were going against Thornton, which has some good speed, and we were down two of our top relay guys - Nico DeValdivielso and Bobby Maggit were not in there - but we got third in the 4x200 with two back-ups in there, and they did a fantastic job with no practice," Kimpton said.

The 4x200-meter relay team clocked in at 1:33.25 to trail only Romeoville.

Oswego East won the 3,200-meter relay with a time of 8:41.88 behind the efforts of Dan Moran, Tyler McQuality, Turner Kelly and Trevor Nold. Ryan Fluke won the 3,200 with a time of 10:23 and Mason Miller was third in 10:49.

Justin Augustin and Devon Burrell went third and fourth in the 110-meter hurdles, respectively, while Augustin placed second in the 300-meter intermediate hurdles in 40.84 seconds. Kallien advanced to the 100-meter dash finals and placed third in 10.67 seconds.

Tyler McQualify won the 800-meter run in 2:07, and Tanner McQuality placed fifth in 2:10.

Michael Delaney won the 400-meter dash in 50.44 seconds and Jacob Salazar placed fourth in 54.36. Charles Thornton won the 1,600 with a time of 4:42 and Kelly was third in 4:51. The Oswego East distance medley placed first in 11:23.

The p relay team closed out the meet with a runner-up finish behind Thornton with a time of 3:28 as Salazar, Tyler McQuality, Delaney and Augustin put together a solid finish.

Oswego East will make its debut at the Matt Wulf Invite today, Thursday, at 4:30 p.m. before the Ottawa Invite on Saturday at noon. The Wolves will also host Plainfield Central and Plainfield East next Monday in a Southwest Prairie Conference triangular at 4 p.m.

"They're definitely getting excited. It motivated them more to see their potential of where they're at now compared to where they finished last year," Kimpton said. "Last year we were running a lot slower than what we're doing this year and we still finished third in conference. We're running faster, and our expectations are starting to shift to not just doing well in conference, but being successful at the state level."
