Area teams clash at Plainfield North Invite
Oswego badminton team places sixth, Oswego East seventh

by Christine Bolin Dascher

Both the Oswego and Oswego East badminton teams competed at the Plainfield North Doubles Invite on Saturday, and the Panthers finished sixth while the Wolves tied for seventh out of 15 teams, several of which were from the Southwest Prairie Conference.

Metea Valley won with 23 points, followed by Joliet Central (17), Joliet West (14), Buffalo Grove (12), West Chicago (10), Oswego (8), Oswego East and Plainfield North (7 points each), Romeoville (6), St. Charles East (3) and Lincoln-Way North (1). St. Charles North, T.F. North, Bolingbrook and Argo did not score any points.

Oswego East saw junior Leena Hwang and freshman Annie Carmody place second at No. 2 doubles. Their opponents from Metea Valley beat them 21-13, 21-12 in the first-place match.

"Our other doubles teams did some good things but we have to put it all together for a full match," Oswego East head coach Marko Jurkovic said. "I'm really just concerned about us getting better and improving. I really wasn't concerned with what the other conference schools (at the invite) were doing."

In both No. 1 and No. 2 doubles, Oswego placed sixth overall, and in the No. 3 doubles bracket, the Panthers placed seventh overall.

Both teams started Southwest Prairie Conference play on Monday. Oswego earned its first dual meet win of the year in the 12-3 victory over Plainfield East.

Eight of the Panthers' wins were posted in singles. They were from Olivia Lewis (21-14, 21-14 at No. 2), Alisa Meurer (21-15, 22-20 at No. 3), Annie Fish (21-18, 21-9 at No. 4), Cali Bonie (21-18, 14-21, 21-17 at No. 5), Lauren Tadych (21-14, 21-17 at No. 6), Ashley Bossler (21-10, 21-10 at No. 7), Charlotte Benstine (22-20, 21-6 at No. 8) and Trisha Nickerson (21-10, 14-21, 21-5 at No. 10).

Four of the five doubles teams also earned a win for Oswego.

They are Bonie/Fish at No. 2 (21-12, 21-19), Lewis/Anne Jakubowski at No. 3 (16-21, 21-18, 21-12), Sydney Blount/Elizabeth White at No. 4 (21-13, 21-13) and Bossler/Morgan Novak at No. 5 (21-9), 22-24, 21-17).

Also on Monday, Romeoville beat Oswego East, 9-6. Singles winners included Hwang, senior Pearl Fox, Carmody, sophomores Amber Williams and Prerana Mitta. The doubles winners were Hwang/Carmody.

"We were without two of our players, which resulted in forfeits, but the girls battled," Jurkovic said. "We had a shot to pull it out but came up short."

Hwang and Fox have been Oswego East's most consistent players all season.

"Pearl and Leena have a few years of varsity experience, and it's exciting to see how they have matured as players," Jurkovic said. "Both players are hard-working, very smart and have confidence in their ability, which has come in time with both girls. There is really no situation either of them hasn't experienced so there is a sense of calmness (and) confidence during matches. They don't allow their emotions to get the best of them, which is really great to see."

The results of Oswego's conference dual with Romeoville on Tuesday were not available at press time. Neither were the scores of the dual with West Chicago on Wednesday.

Oswego East also faced South Elgin on Tuesday and Plainfield Central on Wednesday. The results of both outings were not available at press time. Oswego East is hosting Plainfield South on Monday at 4:30 p.m. Oswego will face Geneva on the road Tuesday at 4:30 p.m.

The rivalry battle between Oswego and Oswego East will take place Wednesday at 4:30 p.m. at Oswego East.
