Oswego East girls' soccer drops three, heads into SPC play

by Mike Slodki

4/3/2014

The Oswego East girls' soccer team is quickly seeing how it measures up against non-conference competition in the early goings of the 2014 season.

Through five contests, the Wolves are wishing they'd stack up a little better.

On Tuesday, the Wolves hosted Rosary for their first home contest of the year and won 4-2. Saturday morning action brought a 9-2 drubbing at the cleats of host Lyons Township, while host Hinsdale South beat Oswego East by a 4-2 count.

Oswego East now sits at 1-4 to begin the current campaign.

Against the Hornets of Darien, freshman Maddie Lambert was fed by classmate Jasmine Ruiz to tie the score at 2-2 in the second half, but Hinsdale South rocketed two goals to pull away.

In Tuesday's game against the Royals, Lambert scored a pair of goals with assists credited to sophomore Allison Ross and freshman Safia Hannin. Hannin also scored on an assist from Lambert, and the final goal was credited to freshman Taylor Peck thanks to Hannin's assist.

First-year coach Hayley Morganegg is dealing with the young team and less-than-ideal weather the best she can, with plenty of time still left for marked improvement.

"We have had a tough start," Morganegg said. "Our girls do play hard, and with that we will continue to get better. Our open to our season is a challenge, however, it should prepare us for our conference schedule.

Morganegg hopes the conditions break soon, however.

"Our day-to-day schedule has been a challenge. We are fortunate to have the ability to rearrange logistics and still play games and get some outdoor practices into our regiment," Morganegg said.

The Wolves will return to the field today, Thursday, at 4:30 p.m. at Oswego as the Southwest Prairie Conference tilts start. The team will then break from action until April 10.
