Plenty of highway work ahead here

As we're reported over the past several weeks, this year will be a very busy one for contractors working on highways in the Oswego-Montgomery area.

Contractors for the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) have already returned to the U.S. Route 30 and Ill. Route 31 interchange in Montgomery. Last year they started a long-planned reconstruction of the interchange, which was first built in 1958 as part of the installation of what was then known as Bypass Route 30 at the Kane-Kendall county line.

When completed later this year the interchange will include a new intersection at Route 31 and Watkins Street.

In addition to the interchange reconstruction, contractors for IDOT will resume work on the reconstruction and widening of Route 30 between Briarcliff Road and Goodwin Drive, just west of U.S. Route 34.

Like the interchange, the Route 30 reconstruction project should be completed later this year. When finished, the new and much improved Route 30 will be a major improvement for our area.

In Oswego, contractors for IDOT are set to begin work next month on another long-planned project: the reconstruction and widening of Ill. Route 71 between Route 34 and Orchard/Minkler Road. Like Route 30, IDOT has been planning to widen the highway for years to improve traffic flow and safety through the village.

In addition to the extra lanes, the Route 71 project will include some important safety improvements: installation of traffic signals along the highway at Douglas Street and a path for use by pedestrians and cyclists.

Construction on Route 71 is expected to continue into next year. When work is finally completed, travel through Oswego on Route 71 should be much easier and safer for all concerned.

Thanks to the Kendall County Highway Department, motorists can look forward to a smoother ride on Orchard Road in Oswego and Montgomery later this year. The highway department, as we reported last week, has awarded a contract for the resurfacing of Orchard Road later this summer from Mill Road north to Route 30.

We urge motorists to slow down, obey work zone speed limits and keep an eye out for workers as they travel through these construction zones in the coming the months.
