Oswego soccer team takes good with bad in 0-0-2 start

It's possible many area girls' soccer teams would let out a sigh after two non-conference stalemates to begin the 2014 season.

The Oswego squad would not be one of those teams, for some soccer action is better than none.

On Monday, the Panthers (0-0-2) suited up for a match on the Naperville Central turf and played their way to a 1-1 tie.

The season opener occurred at Millennium Field in Streamwood, and featured Oswego kicking to a scoreless tie last Thursday against Bartlett.

For new head coach Brian Falli, the Panthers' ability to get to a field and participate in regular season play was a victory that won't show up in the win-loss column.

"Getting these two games in was great," Falli said. "Especially the Bartlett game, we got to be outside and hit a ball on turf. We also put up a good fight against Naperville Central, too."

Against the Redhawks lineup, Oswego saw a crooked number on the scoreboard for the first time in 2014, thanks to a goal from junior forward Kelsey Kraft, who was set up from an attempt by classmate Mikaela Mockenhaupt halfway through the first half of play.

Naperville Central was able to tie the contest thanks to a goal with roughly three minutes left in the action.

Despite the stalemate, Falli was happy with the execution of play leading up to the goal.

"Mikaela ran through another player to win the ball, and Kelsey was right there to get it and get a goal," Falli said. "Mikaela played a great ball there."

Oswego senior Amy Annala had six saves in the tie.

Against the Upstate Eight Conference Hawks of Bartlett, Annala got her work in between the posts with saves to begin the season.

On Wednesday, Oswego was scheduled to battle DuPage Valley Conference output West Aurora, with results unavailable for press time. On Saturday, the Panthers host the Rosary Royals for a 10 a.m. kickoff.
