Snowplow drivers our unsung heroes
Over the past few weeks we've heard comments and received letters from readers to our Forum page expressing thanks to area snow plow drivers for the work they've done clearing local streets during this most difficult of winters. We would like to echo those thoughts here.
Year-in and year-out the technicians for the Oswego and Montgomery Public Works Departments, the Oswego Township Highway Department, Kendall County Highway Department and the Illinois Department are the unsung wintertime heroes of our community.
The snow plow drivers for these agencies work in shifts 'round the clock in the most adverse conditions to make sure first and foremost that police, paramedics and firefighters can reach your home in an emergency. Lives are on the line and without the snowplows, the emergency crews can't get through.
But the plow drivers also make it possible for the rest of us to get to school, work, shopping and other activities on most winter days.
And when they're not plowing out streets, many of the drivers work outdoors in these bone-chilling temps to unfreeze frozen water mains and repair broken water mains.
We're certain the frequent and long hours that plow drivers have logged this winter have been difficult on the them and their families.
All too often the vital services provided by public works employees are overlooked, but it doesn't have to be that way. If you happen to know a driver or one of their family members you might want to express your thanks personally. If you don't happen to have any direct connection you might consider sending along an email of thanks. Let them know you appreciate their hard work amidst this winter's persistently harsh conditions.
