Swim team places fourth at conference meet

by Christine Bolin Dascher

The Oswego-Oswego East boys' swimming and diving team ended up in fourth place at the Independent Conference meet, which was held at Oswego East last Saturday.

Riverside-Brookfield won the six-team event with a 287, followed by DeKalb's co-op (280), Plainfield co-op (234), Oswego (211), Morris (145) and Fenton (56).

"We hung on pretty close with Plainfield. We were definitely within range," Oswego-Oswego East head coach Deryl Leubner said. "With just a couple events to go, we were trailing them by six points. Considering how they handled us at our dual meet (Plainfield won, 116-52, on Jan. 21), for us to be that close to them was outstanding. We had a great meet. The big thing for us is that we swam with a lot of emotion. We were really excited to swim fast, and we did. What we have to do now is understand we have to swim with emotion all season."

Oswego posted just one first-place finish after sophomore Tyler Guist clocked in at 4:52.40 in the 500-yard freestyle. He also finished third in the 200-yard freestyle (1:49.75)

Junior Quinn Parlier placed second in two events - the 50-yard freestyle (22.48) and the 100-yard freestyle (49.31).

The 200-yard freestyle relay team of Parlier, Guist, sophomore Mark Urso and junior Cody Padlo finished third in 1:32.79. The same four swimmers also went fourth in the 400-yard freestyle relay in 3:24.64.

The 200-yard medley relay team of sophomores Michael Latzke, Rhys Johanns, Christian Hill and freshman Tommy Dunn also went fourth in the 200-yard medley relay in 1:58.29.

Urso ended up fifth overall in the 100-yard backstroke in 1:00. Freshmen Srdjan Varagic (fourth place, 245.75) and Joey Hernandez (sixth place, 242.85) competed in the diving portion of the meet.

Junior Cody Padlo finished sixth in the 200-yard IM in 2:10.38. He also went seventh in the 100-yard butterfly in 59.04.

Seventh place also belonged to Johanns in the 100-yard breaststroke in 1:12.05.

The following swimmers recorded eighth-place finishes - Hill in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:14.16), Urso in the 200-yard IM (2:15.81), Latzke in the 200-yard freestyle (1:58.89) and in the 500-yard freestyle (5:21.01) and Dunn in the 100-yard freestyle (56.34).

Johanns placed ninth in the 50-yard freestyle (25.75) and Hill went 10th in the 100-yard butterfly (1:11.09).

The team will not compete again until Feb. 22 at the Metea Valley Sectional.

"This will be the first sectional swim for about half the team," Leubner said. "They'll be in for an awakening...but if you talk about it too much, they'll start getting nervous about it. We'll bring them there and let the intensity and emotion of the meet come out, and they'll respond. For some of the guys, it will be about making the state cut, and for others, it will be about personal-bests. At the sectional, you can still make the state cut and place 14th. We have some guys we think can make the state cut and some will get good experience."
