Who applied for vacant park district board seat?
Board members decline request to release applicants' names

Last week the Oswegoland Park District Board voted unanimously to have Adam Sheinkopf of unincorporated NaAuSay Township fill a vacancy on the board.

Sheinkopf was one of 13 people who said they were interested in filling the vacancy created by the November resignation of Deb Krase, who had served nearly 25 years on the board.

After the deadline for submitting names, Board President Bob Mattingly said park board members would discuss the applicants and interview four finalists in closed session which state law allows, but is not required.

Mattingly announced prior to last Thursday's board meeting he would present Sheinkopf's name to the board for a final vote of approval. Board members subsequently voted 4-0 to approve Sheinkopf's appointment to fill the vacancy until the next park board election in April 2015.

Mattingly was asked after the meeting for the names of all 13 candidates or at least the other three top candidates. He said the board had agreed not to release them.

"They felt that the others lost so they decided not to release them," he said.

Mattingly said they had three female applicants among the 13 and two of them were among the four finalists.

Board member Dave Krahn said he had no objections to the names being released, but the majority of the board was opposed to it. "Personally, I have no issue with it," he said.

In the past the park district and Oswego Public Library District Boards have kept the names confidential of persons applying to fill board vacancies. Members of the Oswego School District Board also withheld names of applicants to vacant board seats prior to the 2011 election.

However, when the board approved John O'Driscoll to fill a vacant seat in January of last year he was the only school district resident to submit an application.

After a question and answer session held in open session, the board approved Board President Bill Walsh's appointment of O'Driscoll. O'Driscoll subsequently served on the board until last April when he stepped down when the un-expired term he was serving expired following an election.
