Common Core math on board's Feb. 10 agenda
Textbooks, curriculum will be placed on public display for 30 days

by Lyle R. Rolfe

The Common Core Math courses being proposed by the federal and state governments for adoption by all public school districts, will be presented to Oswego School Board members next month.

The courses were explained last week to members of the Citizens Advisory Committee for Teaching and Learning by Dr. Lisa Smith, director of elementary education and Dr. Edsel Clark, director of secondary education.

Clark said the teachers involved in the program met last August to discuss how the math curriculum would look for Oswego School District schools.

Their meetings continued through November when they reviewed materials presented by six vendors. They included three textbooks written in 2012 and 2013 by Houghton-Mifflin Harcourt, two written in 2012 and 2013 by McGraw Hill, and one written by Pearson in 2012.

In early November, during a meeting conducted by Smith and Melissa McDowell, assistant director of elementary education, they reduced the textbooks to four and in December, reduced them to two books.

Early this month, members of the Math Curriculum Team along with the Smith and McDowell, met to discuss the books they chose-My Math, published in 2013 by McGraw Hill and Go Math, published in 2012 by Houghton-Mifflin Harcourt.

The directors are expected to ask the committee later this month to recommend the board adopt these two books for the elementary students.

On Feb. 10, the directors are expected to present the Math Curriculum and textbooks to the school board as an information item so they can be placed on public display for 30 days and presented for adoption at its April 14 board meeting.

If adopted, staff hope to have the new program ready for use next fall for the 2014-15 school year.

More information on the textbooks, and the Common Core math program can be found on the school district's website at

Members of the public will be allowed to speak to board members about the program and textbooks for up to five minutes each at the April board meeting.

All board meetings are held at 7 p.m. in the second floor community room at Oswego East High School, 1525 Harvey Road, Oswego.
