Oswego OKs emergency salt purchase
by John Etheredge

1/23/2014

The Oswego Village Board approved a request Tuesday evening from the village's public works department to make an emergency purchase of up to 500 tons of highway rock salt at a cost not to exceed $40,000.

As part of their motion and to expedite the salt purchase, the board agreed to waive the competitive bidding process.

In a memo to the board Mark Runyon, the village's assistant director of public works, noted that additional orders of salt would be placed by the department on an "as-needed basis throughout the remaining snow season."

Runyon added, "Staff will contact multiple vendors to ascertain availability and obtain competitive bid prices as purchases are made."

Runyon noted that the additional salt may be needed if this winter's weather conditions continue into February.

According to Runyon, a total of $55,000 was included in the village's current fiscal year budget to cover the purchase of 1,000 tons of salt for the current winter season.

"We have purchased the contract maximum...and are currently $8,360 over budget," he noted.

Also according to the memo, the village had 700 tons of salt in storage in its dome near the public works center with an additional 400 tons on order.

Runyon proposed paying for the additional 500 tons of salt from village reserve funds.

The board approved the request without comment as part of its consent agenda.
