Winter: why not just embrace it?
1/9/2014

'When it snows, ain't it thrillin'?
Tho' your nose, gets a chillin'
We'll frolic and play, the Eskimo way,
Walkin' in a Winter Wonderland.'

We were overdue. After last year's mild winter, it figures now that we have been enduring a very cold and snowy winter for the past few weeks.

We would encourage area residents to remember that we're all in this winter together. Please slowdown when driving on icy and snow-packed roads and remember the local snowplow crews will get to your street or cul-de-sac as quickly as they can.

Also, just because the TV news reports an impending storm does not mean you HAVE to go out to the store at once to buy bread and milk. Unless you're living in northern Indiana, there's a good chance the next storm won't be as bad as hyped and those plow crews will get the streets cleared within 24 hours so you can get safely to the store.

In the meantime, why not take some enjoyment in the particular beauty of this season? There is a reason why Felix Bernard and Richard B. Smith wrote that song "Winter Wonderland" in 1934. Our outdoors is indeed a wonderland right about now and you don't have to be a kid with a sled to enjoy it. Take a look out the window and relish the beauty of this season and, if you're able, consider getting out the door to take a walk. The Oswegoland Park District makes such winter sojourns easier by regularly plowing its miles of local trails. The park district also offers sledding at Prairie Point Community Park off Plainfield Road in Oswego, and ice skating-when conditions permit-at Briarcliff Lake Park in Seasons Ridge Subdivision, just north of U.S. Route 30 in Montgomery.

If you're able, why let cabin fever set in? Spring will be here soon enough, followed by another hot and humid summer. In fact, we can practically hear the neighbor's air conditioner turning on now...
