Flammersfeld takes seventh at Big Purple Invite

by Kristin Sharp

The Oswego gymnastics team continues to show progress through the early part of its schedule, picking up a seventh-place finish at the Big Purple Invite before defeating Glenbard South in a dual meet on Monday.

Last Saturday, Lyons Twp. won the invite at Downers Grove North with a score of 111.30 - calculated with three scoring gymnasts. Fremd was second ahead of Naperville North, and Oswego finished with a score of 98.2.

Junior Emily Flammersfeld broke into the top 10 on the balance beam, scoring an 8.925 to place seventh overall.

"That was really exciting. She stayed on the beam and we were pleased with that," head coach Sarah Dugan said. "The judges for the beam are always really tough and if you can stay on and connect all your skills, you're going to get a good score."

Junior Alayna Dieter finished with an 8.6 and junior Megan Dobbertin scored an 8.1. On the vault, sophomore Alexia Stamas led with an 8.375, Dobbertin scored an 8.3 and sophomore Alecia Sahatdjian scored an 8.3.

Flammersfeld was 11th on the uneven bars with a score of 8.6. Stamas scored a 7.6 and Dieter scored a 7.575. Stamas was the top scorer on the floor with an 8.3, followed by sophomore Jordyn Anderson's 7.925 and Dieter's 7.8.

On Monday, Oswego scored a 134.65 to easily defeat Glenbard South (115.40).

"I'm excited to see a quiet home meet this early in the season. It was a chance for everybody that is healthy to compete," Dugan said. "We are really pleased with how they did. To have everybody on their home turf competing was nice and we had some really impressive finishes."

Flammersfeld won the vault with a 9.1 and won the bars with an 8.3. Dobbertin was the top scorer on the balance beam with an 8.9 while Flammersfeld scored a 9.0 on the floor to place first and she won the all around with a 34.9.

Oswego will enter the DeKalb Invite on Friday at 6 p.m. before taking the upcoming week off from competition.

"I would be really pleased if we can be in the top three at this meet," Dugan said. "I have no idea where DeKalb stands, but I'm sure they will continue to be a contender with us."
