We were critical of the Oswegoland Park District Board in this space a few weeks ago concerning their handling of the appointment of a local resident to a vacant seat on the board.
While we continue to believe the park board did not need to shut the public out of their deliberations over the appointment, we are pleased with their selection: David Krahn, a lifelong Oswego resident and former village board member.
Krahn is no stranger to the park district. As a teenager Krahn worked as a lifeguard at the agency's civic center pool when it opened in 1969 and has served as a volunteer at the annual PrairieFest community celebration for more than 20 years.
As a village board member back in the 1990s, Krahn helped foster a positive and productive working relationship with the village's business community which culminated in the creation of the Oswego Economic Development Corporation (OEDC).
For the past several years, Krahn has worked as an aid to Illinois House Republican Leader Tom Cross. Krahn's connection with the GOP leader could prove beneficial to the park district in its ongoing quest for state grants to pay for land purchases and facility upgrades.
Krahn understands the park district's value to the community and should provide some needed positive energy on the board.
Though some in the community complain about paying taxes to the park district, we continue to believe it is a worthwhile investment in the community and its residents of all ages.
Last year the park district's property tax levy rate was 41 cents for every $100 of equalized assessed valuation, according to information provided by the Kendall County Treasurer's Office. Under the 41 cent rate, a homeowner with a home valued at $180,000 that did not claim Homestead or any other available exemptions paid $246 in total property taxes to the park district or $20.50 per month. We believe the many neighborhood parks, community events, children's programs, trails and recreation programs the park district offers make it well worth that $20 a month.
