The Oswego-Oswego East boys' swimming and diving team added to the history of the program's success in conference action last Friday and Saturday when the squad won its 11th overall Independent Conference League title.

Oswego has won the conference title 11 of the 13 years it has had a boys' team, and seven of nine of those years since the program has been a co-op with Oswego East.

The team won the title with 283 points ahead of DeKalb's 274. Riverside-Brookfield was third with 252, Plainfield's co-op was next with a 197, followed by Morris and Fenton.

The diving portion of the meet was held at Morris on Friday and the swimming part took place at DeKalb on Saturday.

"This was by far the best conference meet in the history of the many conferences this has been over the years," head coach Deryl Leubner said. "We had four really strong teams this year, so it's good to see how much the conference has grown."

Some of the swimmers from the other teams swam in their technical suits, which are designed to compress the swimmer's frame to a more streamlined and sleek shape for maximum performance in the water.

The swimmers from Oswego chose not to swim in their specialized suits. Instead, they will use them in the postseason, including at the sectional and state meets.

"A lot of teams, particularly DeKalb, were wearing technical suits, and that gave them a definite advantage," Leubner said. "They had a lot of their guys in those suits, so we had to match them a little bit with that."

Oswego placed first in four of the 12 events, but used the team's depth to edge out its closest competition - DeKalb. The Barbs were the only conference team who beat Oswego (90.5-88.5 on Dec. 11) in dual action earlier in the season.

The first-place finishers for Oswego were senior Pierce Parlier in the 200 IM, senior Andrew Carlson in the 50 free and 100 free and the 200 free relay team of Carlson, Pierce Parlier, sophomore Quinn Parlier and senior Bucky Coonradt.

The second-place finishers were senior Zak Thoreson in the 200 free and 500 free, Coonradt in the 100 fly, Pierce Parlier in the 100 backstroke, Quinn Parlier in the 100 free and the 200 medley relay team of Pierce Parlier, Coonradt, Quinn Parlier and Carlson.

Sophomore Cody Padlo placed third in the diving portion and Quinn Parlier also posted a third-place finish in the 50 free.

The two fourth-place finishes were Coonradt in the 100 breaststroke and the 400 free relay team of senior Sam Timken, freshman Tyler Guist, senior Michael Ebinger and Thoreson.

The team competes next at the Neuqua Valley Sectional on Feb. 15-16. After that is the state meet, which takes place Feb. 22-23 at New Trier in Winnetka.

"We're getting into our rest phase now and letting our bodies recover from the last 16 weeks of training," Leubner said. "(As for the sectional meet), I think we could do as well as having a qualifier in every event. We think we should have a good sectional, but place-wise, who knows."
