Honor victims, raise funds for survivors at recent basketball game

The Oswego East High School Wolves varsity basketball team lost their game to Plainfield North 74-67 last week, but the team and fellow students left the gym feeling good about themselves.

The students raised $1,000 to help the families of the 20 children and six adult staff members of the Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn., who were shot to death on Dec. 14, 2012 by a deranged teenager who then took his own life.

The students dedicated the basketball game in honor and memory of the Sandy Hook students and teachers.

The OEHS students all wore green and white to school the day of the game and the basketball team members wore green socks.

Before the game started, the students had the overhead lights in the gym turned off and green and white lights, the Sandy Hook School colors, turned on in honor of the students who died.

Detrick said the students also rang 26 bells for the victims of Sandy Hook.

"About the time of the tragic event of Sandy Hook, OEHS student Andrew Ernest came to us asking if Wolf Pack pep club could do an event to raise money for Sandy Hook," Tilia Detrick, a special education teacher at OEHS said.

Detrick and Patrick Molinari, the school's strength and conditioning coach, are co-sponsors of the Wolf Pack.

Detrick said the Wolf Pack students and sponsors then came together to brainstorm ideas on how to raise money.

They came up with several ways including selling tickets for a chance to be a VIP at the basketball game. Tyler Keating and Kelly Bertrand, OEHS seniors, won the VIP prizes.

"Tyler and Kelly received a front-row comfy seating and dinner served by myself and Mo," she said.

Wolf Pack members also collected spare change from fellow students throughout the day until the game began and sold raffle tickets at the game for prizes that were donated and a 50-50 prize.

Lisa E. Photography donated a free senior or family sitting valued at $200, and a Target gift card for $25 was donated by Amy Ernes and Ron Yanos, parents of OEHS students.

Other prizes included a $50 Visa gift card, a Minnie Minoso signed baseball and hat, and a Black Hawks T-shirt, all donated by Amy's Cutting Edge. A $100 tattoo was donated by Inc 180; and two, one-hour fitness training sessions were donated by The Fitness Buff with Christine Sholtey.

"We plan on donating the money to a bank that is collecting money for the families and then distributing it out evenly," Detrick said.

Detrick said about 10 active members of Wolf Pack come up with ideas for school spirit, and make themes for the games. All students then are encouraged to participate in the events, and welcome to join, she said.

"Really every student and teacher is part of the Wolf Pack. The purpose of Wolf Pack is to encourage school spirit and support our athletes by making games fun for everyone in the school and community to grow our tradition at OEHS," Detrick said.
