Oswego Village Board backs reverse 911 system

Oswego Village Board members voiced support Tuesday evening for a plan to participate in a reverse 911 system offered through KenCom, the agency that provides emergency dispatching services for the village police department.

If the village and the seven other Kendall County municipalities and fire districts served by KenCom all approve, the agency will enter into a three year contract with a firm to provide the reverse 911 system.

Police Chief Dwight Baird voiced support for the reverse 911 system, noting that it would allow dispatchers to notify village residents of approaching severe weather and other emergencies.

Board member Gail Johnson, the village's representative on the KenCom Board, said she believes it would be irresponsible of the village not to participate since the technology for the service is available.

"We have to have a way to get a hold of our residents," Johnson said.

The village's annual cost to receive the service would be $7,400, Baird said.

Baird added that funds have already been earmarked in the village's proposed 2013-14 fiscal year budget to cover the cost for the service.

The village's share of the cost for the service would be based on the village's call volume with KenCom averaged over a three-year period.

When questioned by her fellow board members, Johnson said all seven of the other municipalities and fire districts who are served by KenCom must agree to participate in the reverse 911 system.

If one of the seven other agencies decides not to participate, KenCom will not enter into the contract to provide the service, according to Johnson.
