Gymnastics team receives season-best score at conference

by Kristin Sharp

1/31/2013

A season-high score and one of its best point totals in several seasons helped ease the disappointment of a runner-up finish in the Independent Conference meet.

Oswego hosted the five-team event last Saturday and enjoyed a score of 141.975, while DeKalb scored two points better for the championship and Riverside-Brookfield was a distant third with 122.95 points.

"It's our best score of the season and an even better score than our best score last year," Oswego co-op head coach Sarah Dugan said. "We haven't scored that high in quite awhile, so it's very exciting. Of course knowing we were doing so well, we were hoping we'd beat DeKalb, but it just didn't happen. It was nice that it was close at least."

Oswego opened the day on the vault, scoring a 36.1 behind sophomore Emily Flammersfeld's fourth-place score of 9.350. Senior Kathryn Maher scored a 9.25 for sixth followed by sophomore Alayna Dieter's 8.85 and freshman Alexia Stamas' 8.65.

Maher led Oswego on the uneven bars, placing third with a 9.2. Senior Amanda Padlo scored a 9.0 for seventh while Flammersfeld (8.6) and Stamas (8.3) rounded out the team score.

The team enjoyed a 36.125 on the balance beam behind a trio of scores in the 9's. Flammersfeld scored a 9.2 to place third, Padlo scored a 9.1 to take fourth and Maher was fifth with a 9.075.

Junior Michelle Munoz completed the team score with an 8.75.

"Beam, as far as the coaches, has been the biggest struggle with our lineups," Dugan said. "There are so many girls who are highly qualified to compete on beam, and we're just really excited to have three 9's on beam. We've been a bar team the last year or two, and it shows we can still be the beam team that we've been known for. We've got a great lineup and the girls are just really excited. It goes to show them that they even have little mistakes and still scored well. They need to go ahead and finish strong even with those mistakes because you never know what the score will be if they push through it."

On the floor exercise, Flammersfeld was fourth with an 8.9 while Padlo scored an 8.76, Stamas scored an 8.25 and sophomore Megan Dobbertin scored a 7.95.

Maher placed third in the all around with a career-best 36.275 while Flammersfeld was fifth with a 36.05. DeKalb's Allison Morreale won the all around with a 37.10.

"That is their highest all around all season, and Kathryn's highest all around ever," Dugan said. "Both of them have been working really hard on vault because vault is one of the naturally higher scoring events. They've been making a few corrections on their form and for Emily to get that higher vault score, to get into the 9's, she was very excited about it. Kathryn added an extra twist to her vault and it was the first time she landed it with just a couple steps. It's a much higher value."

Regional meets began Tuesday, with the Oswego Regional being the fourth and final regional meet under the Hinsdale Central Sectional, which arrives on Wednesday, Feb. 6.

The Oswego Regional, which begins Saturday at 1 p.m., will include Downers Grove North, Homewood-Flossmoor and Lincoln-Way East as well as individuals from Plainfield co-op and Yorkville.

"We had our final team meeting (Monday) and we had a talk with that group and they're really excited. They love competing at home and the comfort of their equipment," Dugan said. "I don't know how the week's going to go. I don't think we've ever waited a whole week (before regionals). Coming off of conference on Saturday, we always have a quick turnaround. We're going to start working our way back into the end of the week and we should be ready to go. They're excited and I'm hoping we can repeat last year and be regional champions and qualify for sectionals."

The regional champion advances to the team competition at sectionals, as well as the top five individual finishers in each event and the top five all-around finishers. The top 12 at-large regional scores in each event and the all-around also qualify for sectionals.
