Earlier this month Montgomery Village President Marilyn Michelini presented a check for $3,000 to a representative of the Hesed House homeless shelter in Aurora.
Revenues from the check were the proceeds from the village's 9th annual 5K River Run and 3K Walk held last October.
In accepting the check, Mary Ensor, a shelter administrator, told board members that, unfortunately, the number of individuals seeking shelter and other assistance from the facility continues to climb. She noted that as she left the shelter that evening to make the short drive to village hall she looked into the children's room and saw several children putting out their mats to sleep for the night. But before turning off the lights, she said they were going to have some birthday cake to celebrate one of the child's birthdays. Imagine your own son or daughter having to celebrate their birthday in a homeless shelter.
A few years back, the village began donating the proceeds from the River Run to Hesed House. During that time the amount of the donation has steadily increased. Last fall 261 area residents paid a $25 registration fee and had fun participating in the River Run and Walk. We're hoping that many more area residents circle Oct. 5 on their calendars now and join the 10th annual River Run and Walk so the village can present an even larger check to Hesed House next January. The Ledger-Sentinel will once again have a team of runners and walkers participating and we really hope to see you there, too.
