With just nine wrestlers entered into the 34th Newbill Invitational at Geneva last Saturday, Oswego East scored 46 points as five placed in the event.
Lake Zurich won the invite with 164 points followed by Carmel and Stillman Valley, which tied for second with 139.5 points.
Several varsity starters were noticeably absent from the Wolves' lineup, but senior Andrew Chastain continued to find success in the 152-pound weight class as he placed third overall.
Junior Steve McMahon placed fourth at 285, junior Mason Miller finished sixth at 138, junior Jason Fountain was seventh at 120 and senior Mike Fountain placed eighth at 132.
"Over break, everyone decided to share the flu, so we had a lot of guys out," Oswego East head coach Mike Jezioro said. "Our plan was not to bring so few guys, but the guys that we brought, I was happy with their performance."
At 152, Chastain opened the bracket by pinning Carmel's Garrett Parsell in 39 seconds, and pinned Stillman Valley's Kenny Abitua in 30 seconds. He lost a 7-5 overtime decision to Lake Zurich's Sean Lynch, who went on to win the title by tech fall, but Chastain rebounded with a 34-second pinfall against Mather's Yaghoub Yaghoub.
McMahon also had a strong start, winning by double tiebreaker (4-3) over Lincoln-Way North's Nick Becker before winning a 4-1 decision over Mather's Josue Tinoco. He lost a 5-1 decision to West Chicago's John Carlos, and McMahon ended the day with another 4-3 tiebreaker loss to Geneva's Jake Anderson.
Miller went 1-2 at 138, picking up an 8-0 major decision in the wrestlebacks, but lost an 8-2 decision in the fifth-place match against Geneva's Michael Huck. Jason Fountain lost his opening bout, but won a 4-0 decision in the finals against Lincoln-Way North's Nick Burkman. Mike Fountain lost a 7-3 decision to Stillman Valley's Andy Abiuta in the seventh-place match.
Senior Justin Garzoa won a double overtime match (8-7) to start the 126-pound bracket, but two losses followed to knock him out of the place round. Senior Tim Iannantone won an 9-7 decision in the opening round at 160, but a narrow 4-3 loss in the wrestlebacks knocked him out of the fifth-place match. Sophomore Dan Moran also posted one win, pinning his first opponent at 182, but a pair of losses including a close 4-3 decision ended his day just prior to the fifth-place match.
"Guys like Chastain and Tim lost close matches, but they wrestled well," Jezioro said. "It may have just been a little mistake here or there, and when you're wrestling good competition, you can't make mistakes.
"I was happy with their performance, but there's always things to improve on," he added.
Oswego East's trip to Plainfield South today, Thursday, was postponed to Friday at 5 p.m. before the Wolves enter the Hinsdale South Quad on Saturday at 9 a.m.
Oswego East will also host Romeoville in a rescheduled meet on Tuesday at 4:30 p.m.
"Any time over break, you're happy to get back on a regular schedule. We came right into finals this week and had a dual pushed back, but we're looking forward to getting back into the routine,"_Jezioro said.
