For the fourth time this season, Oswego East and Plainfield East faced off on the volleyball court.
The teams met Tuesday night in the Class 4A Plainfield North Regional semifinal.
This time, the prize was much better than just a win in the record books - it was for a spot in the regional final against fellow Southwest Prairie Conference foe Plainfield North.
No. 2 Oswego East managed to beat the No. 3 Bengals for the third time this year after the Wolves won, 25-17, 25-22. The previous two meetings were in SPC play. The only time Plainfield East beat the Wolves this year was at IMSA's tournament at the end of September.
"Beating a good team three out of four times is tough, but we did it," Oswego East head coach Adam Thurlwell said.
Plainfield East ended the season at 14-15-2. With the win, Oswego East will take on another familiar conference opponent in Plainfield North, the No. 1 seed in the regional. The Tigers (26-8) beat No. 5 Oswego, 21-25, 25-8, 25-12 to advance to the title game today, Thursday, at 6 p.m.
"It's good to get these girls in the championship match," Thurlwell said. "We went to three with (Plainfield) North a week ago (the Tigers won both conference games this year against the Wolves), so we know they are a very talented team, so it's going to be a battle."
There were seven ties in Game 1 before back-to-back Plainfield East errors untied an 11-11 knot. From there, the Wolves used small spurts and kills from sophomore Kelly Bertrand to stay ahead. The game ended on back-to-back Bengal errors.
There were nine ties in Game 2. The last was at 21-21 before Plainfield East committed back-to-back hitting errors that gave Oswego East the lead for the rest of the game. Two consecutive kills from senior Brittany Warnecke and Bertrand ended the match.
Bertrand led the way with eight kills, and Warnecke added seven. Julianna Wadsworkth had 15 assists while Nicole Bertrand had seven. Both Hailey Aguilar and Kelly Bertrand each had seven digs.
"Beating Plainfield East in two is really exciting, and it's going to help us going into the match with Plainfield North," Kelly Bertrand said. "As the season has gone on, we've improved a lot and have really come together as a team. We're excited for Plainfield North. We want another chance at them."
The winner of Thursday's regional championship game advances to the Neuqua Valley Sectional semifinal on Tuesday at 7 p.m. against the winner of the Romeoville Regional. Lemont and Lockport play for that regional championship in Romeoville.
Prior to the playoffs, Oswego East dropped its final two matches of the season. On Oct. 17, Metea Valley beat the Wolves on Senior Night, 25-17, 25-16. Bertrand had three kills and one ace, Yari Martinez and Aguilar each had eight digs and Warnecke had two kills, one ace and one block.
Regular season play ended the next day, when Plainfield North beat the Wolves, 25-21, 20-25, 25-22. Warnecke had nine kills, eight digs and five aces while Aguilar added eight digs.
