Austin Hwang, a senior on the Oswego East boys' golf team, saw his high school career end on Monday at the Class 3A Pekin Sectional, where he was the lone representative for the Wolves.

Another senior, Nikki Funk, also saw the same thing happen on Monday at the Class AA Burlington Central Sectional, where she competed as an individual for the Wolves.

Hwang shot an 83 at Lick Creek Golf Course (par 72) in Pekin. The cutoff for the 10 individuals without their respective teams was 79.

"(Hwang) had a good approach and was prepared, but he struggled on two holes," Oswego East head coach Jim Vera said. "The course was challenging, and it was the type of day where a bad hole or two could take you out of contention. He's disappointed, but in the grand scheme of things, he had a great career.

Yorkville junior Evan Dill was the medalist with a 73. Quincy (312), Neuqua Valley (322) and Edwardsville (327) were the three teams to advance to the state tournament, which is this weekend at The Den and Fox Creek Golf Course in Bloomington.

Funk carded a 96 at Randall Oaks Golf Club (par 71) in Dundee. The cutoff for the 10 individuals without their respective teams was an 86.

Doug Smith, one of Oswego East's athletic directors, accompanied Funk at the sectional while Vera was there for Hwang.

Funk qualified for the sectional when she shot a 93 at the Class AA West Aurora Regional on Oct. 3 at Phillips Park Golf Course in Aurora.

Funk was the 10th and final golfer to get out of the regional.

"(Funk) was happy with that," Vera said. "It was a rough day - it was cold and rainy. Her score was good, especially on a day like that. Obviously, she was thrilled to get out."

Sophomore Alayna Dieter, Oswego East's other female golfer, shot a 118.

"This is how it was when Nikki was a sophomore," Vera said. "Hopefully, Alayna will qualify for state by her senior year."

Waubonsie Valley won the regional with a 324 after medalist Bing Singhsumalee, a sophomore, shot an amazingly low 64 (par 72).

Neuqua Valley was second with a 337 and Metea Valley shot 351. The top three teams advanced to the sectional.

At the sectional, Neuqua Valley freshman Jessica Yuen shot a 75 to earn medalist honors. Crystal Lake Central won as a team with a 340, followed by Wheaton Warrenville South (348) and Crystal Lake/Prairie Ridge co-op (351). These three teams will advance to the state tournament, which takes place this weekend at Hickory Points Golf Club in Decatur.
