Montgomery Village Board member William Keck told his board colleagues Monday evening he hopes a suspect in a Sept. 28 incident in which a village police officer was seriously injured is "quickly found guilty."
Keck continued, "And, as far as I'm concerned, throw him in a hole somewhere and feed him fish heads."
Kendall J. Collier, 18, of the 100 block of Linden Drive, Oswego, is currently being held in the Kane County jail on charges of felony aggravated driving under the influence (DUI) and criminal damage to property in connection with the Sept. 28 incident.
Collier's bond has been set at $250,000 and he is scheduled to appear in court next Tuesday, Oct. 16.
According to police reports, Collier was the driver of a vehicle that struck Sgt. Adam Kuncl as he responded to a report of shots fired at a party taking place in a home on Oakton Avenue, just north of U.S. Route 30, east of Orchard Road.
Police said Kuncl's injuries included a skull fracture that required stitches to his head, a broken scapula, compressed discs in his back and multiple lacerations and bruises on his head, face and body.
He was transported to Rush Copley Medial Center in Aurora where he was treated and then released on Sept. 29. Kuncl is now recuperating at home, according to police.
Keck, a board member for the past 21 years, prefaced his remarks by noting that he has "never been shy about speaking out" and said he felt compelled to say something about the incident in which Kuncl was injured.
Then, reading from a prepared text, Keck said, "On Friday night Sept. 28 we had an incident in the village when one of our police officers, Sgt. Adam Kuncl, was severely injured in the line of duty while responding to a call. The call was shots fired at what turned out to be an underage drinking party. It's my understanding that Sgt. Kuncl was in near critical condition when transported to the hospital."
Keck continued, "Every night on the news we hear about criminal activity. This time it hit home. This time it happened in Montgomery. Once again no individual or city is immune.
"Our police department does an outstanding job of protecting the village, but despite of this incidents still happen. They (police) are the thin, blue line that stands between us and the criminals that prey on us. Fortunately a suspect has been apprehended and is in custody. This person will be charged with multiple felonies and given a very high bond. I'm happy to say he has not been able to make bond and is in jail, awaiting his court date."
Keck said, "Our officers-like all officers-lay their lives on the line every time they report for duty. I wish Sgt. Kuncl a speedy recovery as he has a long way to go."
He continued, "I want to offer my personal thanks to Sgt. Kuncl and all the Montgomery Police officers who protect us every day. I'm sure I speak for everyone in the village on this."
Village President Marilyn Michelini thanked Keck for his remarks.
"Very well said," she added.
Michelini noted that Kuncl is "going to have a long recovery" but is fortunate to have support from his family, friends, neighbors and the village.
