Summer's long gone, but still so much to do

This past weekend was a busy one in the Oswego-Montgomery area.

In downtown Oswego on Saturday hundreds of area residents turned out to enjoy the first ever "Brew at the Bridge" craft beer festival in Hudson Crossing Park. Then, on Sunday, a large number of Oswego School District third through sixth graders-cheered on by their parents, siblings and friends-participated in the annual Kids Triathlon event at Oswego East High School.

It should be noted the Oswegoland Park District played the lead role in organizing the 'Brew at the Bridge' event, and organized the Kids Triathlon in partnership with the Oswego School District.

We were especially pleased to see the large number of students participating in the Kids Triathlon event. To complete the triathlon, the students had to swim 100 meters, bike three miles and run one-half mile. Yes, it was a challenge-especially for the youngest students-but it appeared most of the students thoroughly enjoyed participating. Hopefully this event will continue to grow in popularity. In this day and age when all too many kids lead increasingly sedentary lives in front of computers, HD televisions or other electronic devices, we believe anything that gets them outdoors and in motion is an extremely good thing. Hopefully many will learn that continued physical activity is necessary for a lifetime of physical fitness.

Looking ahead, the Village of Montgomery's downtown will be the location for some more fall fun this Saturday morning. The village is once again sponsoring its annual 5K River Run and 3K Walk beginning at 9 a.m. in front of village hall. A portion of the proceeds from the event will be donated to the Hesed House homeless shelter in Aurora. Last year nearly 300 people participated in the run and walk along the Fox River and village officials are hopeful of attracting still more participants on Saturday. (Registration is continuing for the River Run and Walk at

Immediately following the River Run and Walk, the village's Arts Alliance with assistance from members of the Community Christian Church will host the first-ever Fall Festival in Montgomery Park. The fest will feature a wide variety or craft, art and game stations, plus a bounce house, and free popcorn and coffee.

Meanwhile, in Oswego this Saturday, the village and the Oswego Public Library District is teaming up to sponsor the first ever village literary festival at village hall from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Later this month in downtown Oswego, the Oswegoland Optimist Club will sponsor its third annual Pumpkin Races at Main and Jackson streets on Saturday, Oct. 20, while on Nov. 10 hundreds of area runners will participate in the park district's annual Gobbler Hobbler 10K and Mash Potato Mile.

The somewhat more relaxed days of summer are over, but there are sure plenty of fun things for people of all ages to do in our community this fall.
