Oswego East senior Austin Hwang extends his high school golf season by six days after becoming the only District 308 golfer to advance out of Tuesday's Class 3A Plainfield Central Regional.
Oswego and Oswego East toured Mistwood Golf Club in Romeoville, and Hwang was the fifth individual to punch his ticket to the Pekin Sectional on Monday. Oswego did not advance any golfers through the regional tournament.
"He's been working hard," Oswego East head coach Jim Vera said on Hwang, one of 10 individuals to advance without their respective team. "Ever since we started playing in conference, he's been pretty consistent."
"It's great," Hwang said. "I'm pretty happy. It's great to get out of the regional and be able to play another round."
The top 10 individuals at the sectional advance to the state tournament at The Den at Fox Creek Golf Course in Bloomington on Oct. 12-13.
Neuqua Valley won the regional title after it scored a 313. Jason Roach was the medalist with a 74.
Plainfield North scored a 339 for second place and Yorkville went third with a 341. The top three teams advanced to the sectional at Lick Creek Golf Course in Pekin on Monday.
Minooka just missed the cut with a 348. Plainfield East shot a 360, followed by Oswego East (362), Plainfield South and Plainfield Central (369 each).
"I wouldn't say we are happy with sixth place - we've done better - but it was not terrible," Vera said. "It's disappointing for the team because we are senior-heavy."
Oswego placed ninth with a 376 to conclude its 2012 season, and Bolingbrook was 10th with a 392.
"The guys are a little disappointed, obviously," Oswego head coach Chad Pohlmann said. "We played well during the regular season, so we are disappointed with the way the season ended. But it was a good experience for all of them. Hopefully, they can learn something from it."
Hwang shot a 40 on the front 9 and a 43 on the back for a score of 83. Junior Zach Behnke was Oswego East's next finisher with a 91, followed by senior Evan Tschida (93) and senior Jake Briscoe (95).
Oswego was led by junior Jeff Manna (91), junior Zach Manzella (92), junior Zach Zamin (95) and sophomore Kit Rogers (98).
"The course was tough...but we did our best," Manzella said.
Notes: Plainfield North won the Southwest Prairie Conference tournament with a 314 and finished in first place in the 2012 season on Sept. 26 at Wedgewood Golf Course in Plainfield.
Plainfield Central was second with a 319, followed by Minooka's 321. Oswego East placed fourth with a 323, Plainfield East shot a 324 for fifth and Oswego went sixth with a 326. Plainfield South shot a 335 and Romeoville finished with a 380.
"It was a little disappointing, but we had a really good regular season (dual meet record) at 5-2," Pohlmann said. "We just were not able to put it together at the conference meet."
Oswego East finished the season in fourth place overall. The Panthers ended up fifth on the year.
"It would have been nice to finish in the top three," Vera said.
Behnke (81), Tschida (82), Scott Koedam (82) and Danny Schaltegger (87) led Oswego East. Briscoe and Hwang made all-conference.
The Panthers were led by senior Kenny Papke (79), Manzella (79) and junior Alex Compton (82) and Rogers (86). Manzella and Compton made all-conference.
"It was a surprise. We shot two 79s, but it was tough," Manzella said. "We were right there with the top teams (Plainfield North and Minooka) in the regular season, so it really was a surprise how we finished."
