The Oswego girls' tennis team just accomplished something huge - a win over every Southwest Prairie Conference opponent.
Oswego defeated Plainfield Central 7-0 on Tuesday and improved to a flawless 7-0 in dual meet league action this season.
Oswego has now swept three conference opponents. The closest the Panthers have come to losing in the league was to Oswego East, which they edged out 4-3 on Sept. 11.
On Oct. 5-6, the SPC meet will take place at Romeoville. Oswego East won the conference title last year.
"Having the dual match sweep feels great," Oswego head coach Kate Belke said. "The girls stepped up when they needed to and are excited going into the tournament next week. We know that many teams have changed things up and that we are going to have a tough fight on our hands but look forward to hopefully playing well and taking back the conference title."
Last Thursday, Oswego beat Minooka, 6-1. Winners included junior Courtney Gooch at No. 1 singles and No. 2 sophomore Sara Lemerman, who each swept their opponents, 6-0, 6-0.
All four doubles teams won for Oswego, including sophomore Laura Dombkowski/senior Michaela Wagner (6-1, 6-2) at No. 1, seniors Ashley Blocker/Leanne Schilling (6-0, 6-0) at No. 2, juniors Olivia Lewis/Courtney Licul at No. 3 (6-4, 7-5) and juniors Sydney Blount/Logan Tadder (7-5, 6-2) at No. 4.
Oswego, who finished 10-2 in overall dual matches, dropped just its second dual meet of the season on Monday, when West Aurora won, 5-2. The Panthers won eight dual meets before that. The last time they fell in head-to-head competition was to Waubonsie Valley in the second outing of the season.
The Oswego winners against West Aurora were Lemerman at No. 2 singles (6-1, 6-3) and Blocker/Schilling at No. 2 doubles (6-2, 6-2).
"West Aurora was a tough loss," Belke said. "We had strong performances at second singles and second doubles, but the depth we usually count on wasn't there."
At Oswego's own invite, where the Panthers placed third overall on Saturday, Gooch took first place at first singles. She defeated ACC (6-0, 6-3), Batavia (6-2, 6-2) and Naperville North (6-4, 6-1). Also posting wins against ACC and taking third place, was the No. 1 doubles team of Wagner and Dombkowski (6-0, 6-4), the second doubles team of Blocker and Lewis (6-1, 6-1) and Lemerman (6-4, 4-6, 10-7).
"Saturday was a tough day due to all the rain and cold, but the girls adjusted well," Belke said. "We like the Oswego Invite because we get to see a couple of sectional opponents, but it's a tough day. Batavia has four state qualifiers back and Naperville North is always a tough team."
Oswego hosts the Panther Quad on Saturday, beginning at 8 a.m. Oswego, Oswego East, Yorkville, Aurora Central Catholic, East Aurora, IMSA, Rosary, Waubonsie Valley, West Aurora and Batavia are the 10 teams participating in the IMSA Sectional on Oct. 13.
The state tournament will be Oct. 18-20 at various locations high schools the northwest suburbs.
