A lot of emotions surrounded the end of Oswego East's trip to the still-new turf setting at West Aurora High School on Saturday: bewilderment, shock.
You can't forget jubilation.
Not only did an improbably exchange happen for the final goal with 24 seconds left in regulation, but it was the peak of a comeback that required the Wolves' roster to scale a tall mountain to get there.
Alex Torres won an exchange on a throw-in with the Blackhawk goalkeeper and punched it past the obstacle for a game-winning goal as Oswego_East won 4-3 over West Aurora.
With an additional 3-1 win over visiting Lockport on Sept. 5, and a 2-1 overtime loss to host Minooka on Sept. 4, Oswego East, with a still fluctuating lineup is at a 3-4-1 clip thus far.
Physical play and a struggling offense lowlighted the first handful of minutes on Saturday, but opportunities started to present themselves after falling behind 2-0.
Oswego East shook off a Manny Gurrola goal five minutes, 12 seconds into the contest, and a Nay Sirr conversion 8:14 after that to power through to the net.
Oscar Martinez' penalty kick was deflected, but Danny Ruiz' goal with 11:43 left in the first half halved the deficit and provided a boost going into halftime.
The second half scoring began with a goal that deadlocked the contest: Oliver Czopek's attempt blasted through to the net with 32:28 remaining in regulation.
Oswego East took its first lead of the contest on an Torres penalty try with 28:18 to go.
Now in the position of trying to protect a lead, the dynamics of the match shifted, but a header attempt by Gurrola near the post went in to tie matters at 3-3 with 10:32 remaining.
Goalkeeper Sean Phetchanpheng displayed his defensive prowess to go along with his offensive skills this season, by turning away several West Aurora opportunities in the waning minutes.
''He's been doing a great job all year," Oswego_East head coach Steve Szymanski said. ''He made a crazy save today and one every game. The first part of the game (West Aurora) controlled the game, but we moved a couple of guys around (Torres and Czopek) and putting our hardest workers on the field at forward helped."
It led up to the final exchange that sent Oswego_East to the win.
''I tried to force (West Aurora goalkeeper) inside and he went there," Torres said. ''So I was able to cut it through and place it in the net."
''Coach just said we needed to work harder, play like that the whole game, and that's what we did in the second half," Torres added.
Other action leading up to the win had a win over the visiting Porters thanks to goals from Cooper Fell, Oscar Martinez and Juan Alday.
Against Minooka, Danny Madrigal supplied the lone goal before the loss.
Oswego East takes on IMSA today, Thursday, at 4:30 p.m. and Waubonsie Valley on Saturday at 10 a.m. before taking a week-long break, returning to the field on Sept. 22 to host Naperville Central.
