Why schedule Batavia, Geneva and Naperville Central at this early juncture of the season?
"It's a test to see how good we are, and so far we're pleased," Oswego head coach Travis Carlisle said.
How could an Oswego soccer observer not be pleaased after a comeback win to open things, and then a barrage of goals against Upstate Eight Conference fixture Geneva before losing a tough battle to DuPage Valley Conference cornerstone Naperville Central?
A 2-1 way to start things against formidable opponents is working well so far for Carlisle and crew.
"This was absolutely the right way to start. Geneva and Batavia are rebuilding but they are still well-coached and well-organized," Carlisle said.
Along Route 71, the Panthers were buoyed by goals from Curt Grysiewicz, Mitch Lewis on a feed from Nick Nelson, Felipe Duran and a Daniel Fernandez goal from Mitch Lewis.
"We really try to tell the players to keep their focus in the first five minutes of a half and the last five minutes, and they really did well," Carlisle said.
Things didn't end as well playing the Redhawks squad off of Aurora Ave, in Naperville, with the Panthers allowing three goals in the second half.
Goalkeeper Christian Torres added 12 saves against the Naperville attack.
"We had played our third game in five days, and you could tell. Christian had a good game and kept us in it," Carlisle said.
Up ahead for the Oswego program is a skirmish with visiting West Aurora High School on Saturday, Sept. 1, and a visit from Plainfield East on Tuesday, Sept. 4, before playing a makeup match in Romeoville on Wednesday, Sept. 5. The matches lead up to the respected Pepsi Showdown hosted by Lyons Township beginning Sept. 8.
