Early on, it looks like the battle to replace offensive output for the Oswego East boys' soccer team could be an uphill one.
Faced with the daunting task of replacing 70 goals from the 2011 campaign, the Wolves program began the 2012 season at the Red Devil Cup hosted by Hinsdale Central, and then went on to Southwest Prairie Conference play against rival Plainfield South.
After the first three matches of 2012, the Wolves are still in search of their first victory, at 0-2-1.
Thursday's kickoff occurred at Lincoln-Way East as part of the Red Devil festivities, where the Frankfort institution was able to stifle Oswego East until Oscar Martinez was able to find the net with 29:17 left to play to finish with a 1-1 tie.
On Monday, the Wolves battled the tournament host in Hinsdale, and were handed a 5-1 defeat despite the best efforts of Oliver Czopek's goal with 13:11 left in the first half.
The Wolves finally saw offensive firepower and had a sense for the dramatic on Tuesday afternoon in SPC play against visiting Plainfield South, but fell in penalty kicks after a 3-3 regulation deadlock.
David Hernandez scored an Oswego East goal to get things going, and now has the honor of putting up the quickest goal in team history, coming 16 ticks into the match.
Sean Phetchapeng supplied the other two after being pulled from the goalkeeper spot, scoring with 4:56 and 1:51 left. Nate Paisley got into the act with an assist.
"I was talking with my coaches and I was like, 'we have to get Sean out of there.' He's our best chance to score, and what he was able to do in 33 minutes with two goals was pretty cool. He makes things happen," Oswego_East head coach Steve Szymanski said.
Szymanski still thinks the feeling out process and roles are being fleshed out a bit in this early juncture, as evidenced by the Plainfield South match.
"It's a dilemma and it's really tough, and we'll have to figure out who to put in goal," Szymanski said.
Up ahead for Oswego East is a Red Devil Cup matchup in Downers Grove South today, Thursday, followed by a to be determined Cup encounter on Saturday.
The Wolves make a trip to Minooka on Tuesday, and a home matchup on Wednesday, Sept. 5, against Lockport.
