Coming off an injury-plagued season that forced many young athletes into the varsity lineup, the Oswego girls' basketball team finally enjoyed a healthy and productive summer.
In addition to its Oswego co-ed basketball camp, the Lady Panthers played five games at Neuqua Valley and participated in a 10-game league schedule at Plainfield Central while traveling to the Notre Dame camp in Indiana.
"We used all of our 25 contact days with our high school camp and skills camp that we run with the boys' (team) for the co-ed camp," Oswego head coach Chad Pohlmann said. "We had excellent participation from our girls from camp to summer league and the shootouts. I couldn't have been happier with our summer.
"In terms of our commitment level and our success, it's one of the best summers that we've had since I started coaching at Oswego," Pohlmann added. "I'm very optimistic about our season, and we have a core group of players who really love playing basketball. They've very committed to playing. We're going to get after it again in October.
At Neuqua Valley, Oswego posted a 4-1 finish with wins over Waubonsie Valley, Plano, West Aurora and St. Francis with its only loss coming against Geneva in tournament play.
The Plainfield Central league schedule was comprised of several Southwest Prairie Conference teams as well as Neuqua Valley and Yorkville.
"We did really well there too. Out of the 10 games, we only lost two," Pohlmann said. "We went back to Notre Dame again and came away without any injuries, so that was a good thing. We did really well and got to play against teams from Michigan, Ohio, Pennsylvania and Indiana. We didn't play a team from Illinois at all. It was a solid summer."
Oswego spent much of the 2011-12 season without three of its returning starters, and three freshmen played a significant role in the varsity rotation.
Senior Kelsey Nelson and junior Amina Green are now healthy after earlier injuries - and returning sophomores in Amri Wilder, Erin Sinnott and Jordan Campbell already boast a wealth of varsity experience.
"We definitely saw a lot of the kids mature and they understand going through last year, they have put in a lot of time to get better. They've worked a lot oat their games. They've worked a lot on their conditioning and a lot of them have come back much-improved.
"Amri Wilder and Erin Sinnott really showed how much they've improved from last year. They realize it's their team now. In a way, it's nice to have them developing their own identity. We have a core group of juniors and sophomores that really have committed and have done a great job, and have really, really improved."
Oswego will also enjoy the addition of Newark junior Kelsey Patrick, who saw varsity playing time as a sophomore on the Norsemen squad that finished 24-6 last winter.
"She's transferred to Oswego and will be participating with us next year. She was a nice addition," Pohlmann said. "She's fit in nicely."
The 2012-13 season officially begins on Oct. 29 with the first day of practice.
