The Village of Oswego wants to be included in Metra's new strategic plan.
In a unanimous ballot this past week, the village board approved a resolution encouraging "Metra to continue efforts to evaluate the feasibly of a service extension to Oswego, and incorporate this potential outcome into the (agency's) adopted strategic plan."
Village officials are also urging village and area residents to voice their support for an Oswego Metra station in a survey on the agency's website at metrarail.com.
The deadline to fill out the online survey is Aug. 10.
In a letter published in this week's Ledger-Sentinel, Village President Brian LeClercq describes the survey as "the perfect opportunity to encourage Metra to expand its services to Oswego and turn the Park-n-Ride at the corner of Mill and Orchard into a station. Not only would this be of great convenience to the commuters who currently use the Park-n-Ride, but this would bring economic stimulus to the area, developing new business and with it, new employment opportunities."
LeClercq added, "The Park-n-Ride in Oswego has benefited countless Oswego residents as well commuters from Yorkville, Plano and beyond. Now, however, we have the opportunity to request that Metra expand its services to be able to continue to serve its customers in our area. To do so, however, we need your help."
In a related matter, Steve Jones, village administrator, told board members he planned to attend a public hearing that Metra was holding in Geneva this past Tuesday (July 24). The hearing, at Geneva's City Hall, was one of several the agency has been holding throughout the Chicagoland area as part of the preparation process for the its strategic plan.
When questioned by board member Gail Johnson, Jones said it would be beneficial if board members attended the hearing to meet with Metra officials and also express support for a local Metra station.
Board member Terry Michels asked Jones if village staff had "reached out" to Kendall County officials to also send representatives to the hearing.
Michels explained that he understands the RTA (Regional Transportation Agency) sales tax now levied in the RTA's six county service area would have to be extended to include Kendall County in order for Metra to locate a station in Oswego.
Michels said he believes it would be good if some county board members attended the hearing to show their support for Oswego's Metra station effort.
