A retired Oswego School District teacher arrested last month for allegedly arranging to have sex with an underage girl in Wisconsin has plead not guilty and is awaiting trial.
Waukesha County, Wis., District Attorney Brad Schimel said this week that Donald Paul McDowell of Oswego entered his not guilty plea on July 2.
Waukesha police arrested McDowell June 5 at a Waukesha hotel following an Internet sting operation. McDowell remains in custody at the Waukesha County Jail on a $100,000 bond, according to county records.
According to records, a trial date has been set for Nov. 13 at the Waukesha County Courthouse before Judge Patrick C. Haughney.
McDowell is facing one charge of using a computer to facilitate a sex crime and two charges of possession of child pornography.
According to Oswego School District officials, McDowell taught sixth grade at East View Elementary School from 1970 until 1979, when he transferred to Thompson Junior High School, where he taught math until he retired after the 2002-2003 school year. Officials said McDowell coached girls' volleyball, basketball and track.
School District spokesman Kristine Liptrot has said no complaints were filed against McDowell while he was a district employee.
According to the criminal complaint, McDowell traveled to Wisconsin to meet what he thought was a 14-year-old girl, after a police detective posed as the girl's father online.
McDowell was apprehended at a hotel after checking in, according to the complaint. His vehicle, computers and other equipment were confiscated, and pornographic images were found on that computer and equipment, resulting in the child pornography charges, records state.
A search of McDowell's vehicle also revealed condoms, a Viagra prescription and a sex toy, the documents state.
