The Oswego East summer baseball team endured long rides both Monday and Tuesday to participate in the Illinois High School Baseball Coaches Association Phil Lawler Summer Classic.
The Wolves, seeded No. 14 in the St. Charles East Regional, upset No. 3 Rockford Boylan on Monday with a 4-1 win. On Tuesday, Oswego East's summer season came to an end in Crystal Lake when the No. 6 Crystal Lake South won, 12-5.
Oswego East finished the season 14-6-1, which is a huge success in the eyes of head coach Bobby Kaminski.
"I thought it was a great summer in terms of wins and losses," Kaminski said. "We had a lot of opportunities to see different guys play."
Against Rockford Boylan, senior Dave Schurr had a great game on the mound and at the plate. Pitching-wise, the lefty threw a complete game and gave up five hits with seven strikeouts. Offensively, he went 2-for-2 with an RBI walk in the seventh inning, when the Wolves scored twice.
"As a junior, he contributed mainly as a pitcher for us. He didn't have a ton of at-bats," Kaminski said of Schurr, who just finished his junior year as Oswego East's lone All-Suburban Prairie Conference selection. "He's someone we'd like to see step up to the plate more often."
Senior shortstop Chris Cooper scored three of the Wolves' four runs. He crossed home in the top of the third on a Rockford Boylan error and again in the fifth after senior Kyle Weller produced an RBI double.
Schurr's RBI walk with the bases loaded allowed Cooper to score his third run of the game. Cooper, the leadoff batter, reached base when Rockford Boylan made another error. Weller scored when the next batter, junior Zach Behnke, was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded. Weller reached on a Titans error.
Rockford Boylan scored its run in the bottom of the second.
"They were definitely excited about upsetting a higher seed," Kaminski said. "We just executed on the things we needed to."
Against Crystal Lake South, Oswego East led by as much as 3-1 after two innings. The Gators, however, scored once in the bottom of the third, five times in the fourth, twice in the fifth and three times in the sixth.
"(Crystal Lake South) executed on a lot of the little things," Kaminski said. "They took a couple of extra bases on us and in key situations, they got the big hit they needed."
This was Kaminski's first summer as head coach. He was an assistant coach with the Wolves before he took over the program at the end of the spring, when Jim Vera resigned to spend more time with his family.
"I definitely enjoyed the summer," Kaminski said. "It was a lot of fun. In terms of taking steps in the right direction, I think we are doing that."
Four teams remain in the St. Charles East Regional with No. 9 Kaneland facing No. 5 St. Charles East and No. 10 Cary-Grove facing No. 6 Crystal Lake South on Wednesday. Results were unavailable at press time.
