It's a two-man race.
Mike Dabney of Oswego collected enough signatures to get his name on the Nov. 6 ballot to challenge long-time Republican incumbent coroner Ken Toftoy as an independent candidate, Kendall County Clerk Debbie Gillette confirmed last week.
Dabney, a firefighter-paramedic with the Oswego Fire Protection District, first challenged Toftoy unsuccessfully in the 2008 Republican primary. He says he found out June 25 that his petitions were good.
"I am not going anywhere, and I am looking forward to having fun addressing issues," Dabney said. "I know people are interested in making a change in the coroner's office and I'm going to be accountable to Kendall County voters and the citizens."
Dabney collected about 2,400 signatures but only needed 1,577 based on the number of the voters that cast ballots in the last election. He turned in 168 pages of petitions and there were two people that requested copies of his petition, Dabney said.
"I wanted people to know that I was serious about wanting to be coroner," he said adding that it gave him an idea of what the public was concerned about and what they want to see.
Those challenging Dabney's signatures had until July 2 but no one filed a formal challenge.
He says collecting the signatures was a lot of work and that he had much help from family and friends. He also attended PrairieFest in Oswego and the downtown Oswego Farmers Market.
"I really need to thank all the people that helped me, all the people that signed by petitions," he said.
Dabney said he is concerned about finances, taxes and over-spending on the coroner's budget.
"I know I can cut that spending and save some money," he said.
As for Toftoy, he said he looks forward to the challenge from Dabney.
"I wish him the best," Toftoy said, noting that Dabney previously served as a deputy coroner for him. Anybody can run for coroner."
