We want you to save on your water bill-and help save our region's water supply. As this summer's drought-like conditions continue, more and more area residents may be compelled to start watering their lawns.
If they do choose to water, Oswego and Montgomery residents should remember that under local ordinances they are limited to watering their lawns to alternating days based on their addresses. Residents in both villages may water in the early morning and early evening only. Those with odd-numbered addresses may water on odd-numbered days, while those with even-numbered addresses may water on even-numbered days.
We, however, hope that most residents choose to keep their sprinklers and hoses in the garage. Though area lawns now look dead, they are actually in a dormant stage. When we finally get a good soaking rain, they will quickly revive and the lush green color will return.
In the meantime, residents who don't water can anticipate the savings on their water bills and on the gas they won't have to purchase to fuel their lawnmowers. It's a win-win.
More importantly, residents who choose not to water will be doing their part to help maintain the water supply in northeastern Illinois for future generations. Recent studies have shown that it is taking longer and longer for deep well aquifers from which Oswego, Montgomery and many other area municipalities draw their water to re-charge. The demand for water from these aquifers will only increase as the local and regional population continues to grow. For the sake of their children and future generations, residents should resist the urge to water their lawns and practice conservation.
