John W. Sparlin of Plainfield, was hired last week as executive director of administrative services for the Oswego School District.

His position was created by Dr. Matthew Wendt, who took over as superintendent this week to replace Dr. Dan O'Donnell who resigned effective June 30.

Wendt said Sparlin will be in charge of human resources, student services and communications.

He also will take over some of the duties of Todd Colvin, who resigned from his position as associate superintendent for administration, effective June 30 to accept a similar position with a high school district in the Arlington Heights area.

Sparlin's base salary will be $115,000, and $126,932 with the district's contribution to his Teacher's Retirement System (TRS) benefits.

This is considerably less than Colvin's salary of $150,100 and $165,674 with TRS. However, Sparlin will have fewer responsibilities than Colvin who was the number one assistant to the superintendent.

Wendt said Sparlin will report to Dr. Paul O'Malley, who was hired last month by the board, to replace Tim Neubauer as assistant superintendent for finance and business. Wendt said O'Malley is now his number one person. He will be taking over some of Colvin's duties.

Neubauer resigned effective June 30, to accept a similar position with the Barrington School District.

O'Malley's salary with benefits and the districts contribution to his TRS benefits were set by the board at $198,675. Neubauer's salary with the TRS benefit was $156,320.

Sparlin was one of 44 people who applied for this position through the Illinois Association of School Boards, which was retained by the school district board to lead a candidate search to fill the position.

Wendt, who was on the team to interview the top six candidates, said Sparlin was his first choice for the job.

Sparlin, who has been in education for 20 years, spent the past two years as executive director of human resources at the J. Sterling Morton School High District 201 in Cicero.

Before that he was employed by the Valley View School District where he served four years as principal of the Romeoville High School, two years as principal of the Humphrey Middle School and three years as assistant principal of curriculum and instruction at Bolingbrook High School.

Before moving into administration at Valley View, he was a physical education and health teacher and coach. He also was employed at Glenbard South High school for two years as dean of students, a teacher and coach.

Sparlin said he is looking forward to working as a member of the district's leadership team.

He received his bachelor's degree from Eastern Illinois University, his master's degree in education from Benedictine University and a certificate of advanced study degree with a superintendent endorsement from Lewis University where he is working on his doctorate degree.

Sparlin and his wife, Jodi, have three children: Jake 12, Katelyn 10 and Kirsten six.

"On behalf of the Board of Education, I would like to welcome Sparlin to the district family," Bill Walsh, board president said.

Walsh added, "I believe Sparlin's educational philosophy of setting high expectations for our students, focus on collaborative work to drive excellence throughout the district and the need to have a perpetual cycle of learning where students and teachers will truly be life long learners provides an excellent foundation for supporting the students, teachers, building administrators and staff throughout the District."
