The Oswego baseball team snapped a seven-game winning streak on Tuesday after Plainfield South topped the Panthers, 3-0, in Plainfield.
The Cougars avenged their doubleheader loss against Oswego, which beat them 7-2 and 8-7 just six days earlier. The Panthers will cap the summer season this week against rival Oswego East.
"We had a lot of guys not here (Tuesday) because of football, but it's good for some of these other guys to get their chance," Oswego assistant coach Joe Giarrante said. "They are getting their opportunity to play at the varsity level. Even when we play with what we have, I still expect to win baseball games."
Oswego (8-4) hosted Oswego East on Wednesday in a doubleheader that was dedicated to Eric Lederman, but results were not available at press time. The Panthers' final summer game takes place today, Thursday, at Oswego East at 5 p.m.
"Of course more emphasis is put on these games because it is Oswego East, but I'd like to see some of that go away because it's just a baseball game," Giarrante said. "But, being so close, it is easy to fall into that rivalry atmosphere. Of course, summer is more laid-back, but I think the kids will be ready to play. The kids who are out because of football will be back and ready to work."
Against Plainfield South, Oswego managed just two hits - both from junior Jeff Pieroni. The Panthers did not draw any walks and struck out nine times.
"It's hard to score when you only have two hits," Giarrante said. "Too many strikeouts and not putting the ball in play when we needed to."
"We just didn't hit as good this time against (Plainfield South)," Pieroni added.
Plainfield South scored once in the first, once in the second and again in the third. Oswego pitcher Kelse Gengler took the loss after giving up six hits and four walks. The Panthers settled down after the third, did not make any errors and only allowed one hit.
"Kelse pitched alright," Giarrante said. "He walked a guy in the first, and he scored. He hit a guy in the second and he scored so it was the little things - the mental things - we've struggled with that cost us some runs."
The winning streak started on June 13, when the Panthers topped Kaneland, 4-3 and 4-0 in a doubleheader at home. After a cancelled date with Yorkville, Oswego topped Plano twice on June 18.That was followed with a 6-1 victory over Aurora Central Catholic, where Gengler earned the win on the mound.
The Panthers were scheduled to face Newark on Monday, but the Norsemen were forced to cancel the game due to lack of players.
"We were hitting good and pitching good," Pieroni said of what was working for the Panthers during the winning streak.
All that is left now for the Panthers is Oswego East.
"We just want to beat them," Pieroni said.
