It's nice to see contractors for the Kane County Division of Transportation are now making major progress on the widening of Orchard Road to five lanes between U.S. Route 30 and Jericho Road on Montgomery's west side.
As most area residents were aware, the widening project, which started last year, was long overdue. When contractors take down the barriers this fall, the last two-lane segment of Orchard Road between Ill. Route 71 in Oswego and Randall Road in North Aurora, will be a distant memory and motorists will be able to travel a five-lane road designed to accommodate the high volume of traffic that uses it.
We're also looking forward to the start-up of two other long planned highway reconstruction and widening projects: Route 71 between Orchard/Minkler Road and U.S. Route 34 in Oswego, and U.S. Route 30 between Ill. Route 31 and Route 34 in Montgomery and Oswego.
As we've reported previously, the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) plans to seek bids for both projects either late this year or early next year. Like Orchard Road, both are badly needed not only to expedite traffic flow, but to improve safety for motorists. Route 30, in particular, has been the site of numerous serious and sometimes fatal traffic accidents since it first opened as 'Bypass 30' in 1959. Adding lanes to Route 30 should help end the carnage.
