The Oswego School District Board appointed Christine Smith as principal of Long Beach Elementary School Monday night.
The appointment becomes effective on July 1.
Smith, who comes from Rochester, Minn., will be waiting to welcome students when they return to classes this fall at the school located at 67 Long Beach Road in the unincorporated Boulder Hill Subdivision.
She will replace Kevin Lipke, who will become superintendent of Pontiac School District 429.
"I am honored and very excited about taking on the role of principal at Long Beach Elementary School," Smith said.
"I hope to bring enthusiasm to the school through my experience, my sense of humor and collaboration with the students, staff and families," Smith said.
Smith began her educational career in 1989 as a first grade teacher in the Minooka District 201 where she served for six years.
She then spent six years as a second grade teacher in Seneca District 170.
From 2001 through 2006 Smith served as an elementary school principal at Coal City Elementary School and then served as principal of Holmes Elementary School in Maercker School District 60 in Clarendon Hills for two years.
The last four years, she served as principal of Riverside Central Elementary School in Rochester Minnesota.
Kristy Kuntz, executive director of human resources, said Smith's salary was set at $86,070, which will total $95,000 when the district's contribution to her Teacher's Retirement System is included.
Lipke's base salary was $81,700 or $90,177 with the district's TRS contribution included. He had been principal of Long Beach for five years.
Smith received her bachelor's degree in elementary education, master's degree in curriculum and instruction, as well as her Type 75 Administrative Certification from Illinois State University.
"Christine is a very strong, experienced building principal who comes to Long Beach from a highly-successful tenure as an elementary principal," Superintendent Dr. Dan O'Donnell said at Monday's board meeting.
"Her expertise in improving student achievement for a diverse community of students and families will build nicely on the great foundation built by our Long Beach staff and exiting principal Kevin Lipke," he added.
Smith resides in Morris with her two-year old daughter, Alaina, and her three dogs.
