Citizens plan June 1 event in Yorkville park

by Tony Scott

5/24/2012

A group of Yorkville residents is organizing a property tax "Revolt Day" event for Kendall County residents at a park in Yorkville next Friday, June 1.

According to information from Mark Johnson, one of the event organizers, it will be held at Town Square Park just north of the Fox River on the west side of Route 47 from noon to 8 p.m. next Friday.

Johnson said in a letter to the Ledger-Sentinel last week that the event will be a "protest and to show solidarity," and that organizers will be handing out information "to help people prepare for this fall when you receive your tax assessment in the mail."

"Many people complain but very few follow through and fight their tax bill," Johnson wrote. "The Kendall County Assessor's Office only gives you 30 days from publication date to file your complaint."

In his letter, Johnson encourages visitors to bring homemade protest signs and chairs if they plan on staying.

Yorkville resident Judith Burks, another organizer, said the event is being held in Yorkville because it is the county seat and is home to county officials' offices.

Burks said there isn't a strict program for the event, but they will have handouts detailing the process of protesting tax assessments.

"The reason it's from 12 to 8 is because people can drop by when they're available," she said. "We will be there in the park from noon to 8 p.m., but whoever is going to come by will come by."

Burks said the idea for the event "grew out of conversations with citizens in the community, and wanting to help people understand what the process is, if that's what they want to do."

Burks said some local government officials have been invited to the event, but that they had not reached out to the county supervisor of assessments. She said the organizers would consider doing so, however.

"He would be a good guy to have there," she said.

Don Burks, Judith's husband, said the group is "certainly not a Tea Party group or that sort of thing."

"You hear so much information and people are concerned about taxes, and obviously we are too, but it seems as though we keep developing higher debt," he said.

Burks has voiced opposition to the city buying the Rec Center building, and said he is concerned about the city government accumulating too much debt.

"I'm wondering, what's the tipping point here?" he said.

Burks said he's interested in getting other people's opinions.

"Hopefully they will make our city people and county people more accountable," he said.
