Ron Murphy becomes only the second head coach in the Oswego East boys' basketball program's young history when he was hired into the position on April 19.
He replaces former head coach Jason Buckley, who resigned from the position in March after compiling a record of 121-74 over seven seasons with the Wolves.
"It's certainly something I've wanted to do and worked towards to prepare myself for the role," Murphy said.
"I was surprised a little bit by Jason's decision, but also excited to become head coach."
Murphy has been an assistant in the boys' basketball program for five years working at the sophomore level before joining Buckley on the varsity sideline for the last four seasons. This is his first head coaching position.
"Having been on the staff, it certainly lends itself to having a much easier transition than someone coming from the outside," Murphy said. "At the same time, I'm going to make it my own. I'm going to implement some of the things that I want to."
Prior to joining the Oswego East coaching staff, Murphy spent eight years with the Chicago Bulls Training Academy in Lisle.
Murphy, a graduate of Lisle High School and Northern Illinois University, will also remain as the assistant athletic director as well as a social studies teacher while taking on the new coaching title at Oswego East.
"It's OK with me. Fortunately, my wife is very supportive and understanding and she enjoys coming to the basketball games," Murphy said of his busier schedule ahead.
Murphy will now take the Wolves into the summer offseason to prepare for the upcoming 2012-13 campaign.
"I met with the kids last week and established some expectations for them and try to identify what we will expect of them moving forward and what they can expect from myself and my staff moving forward," Murphy said. "Getting the word out about our camp, which is set up to run through June as it has in the past, and making sure we have kids here who are getting better every day."
Murphy will be one of five first-year head coaches in the Oswego East athletic department next year.
Tyson LeBlanc was hired in December as Oswego East's newest head football coach for the 2012 season.
The athletic department must also fill vacant head coaching positions for baseball, boys' volleyball and boys' track and field while the district also works to hire a new athletic director.
